Powered by 144 of the latest and brightest Osram Oslon SSL80 white 3500K leds, this light easily exceeds the PAR output of a 400 watt MH or HPS light while only drawing 180 watts from the mains.

Plant Photonics introduces the Stellar range of grow lights which gives growers a premium quality alternative to COB´s. To create it we took our standard led panels and combined them with the best white leds for horticulture, Osram Oslon SSL 80 GW CS8PM1.CM 3500K 90CRI leds. The result is a light which is brighter, more efficient, cooler running and longer lasting than an equivalent COB light.

These are a new generation of leds with extreme efficiency and an ideal spectrum for growing. Unlike most white leds which have a peak red output at 600nm, these peak at 630nm (which is the same as the standard red leds used in grow lights) and still put out 80% of peak at 660nm (the same as hyper red leds). They also have a much higher output at 440nm (deep blue) than most other 3500K leds for a more balanced growing spectrum. This means that the plants can use the light from the leds far more efficiently, giving better growth with less power consumption.

As the leds are spread over a large area instead of being concentrated in a small space like COB leds, they operate at a much lower temperature (up to 50C lower) giving better efficiency, reliability and longer life. To increase efficiency and lifespan even further we run them at only 54% of their maximum rated current. As these lights generate a bit more heat than our regular panels they are equipped with top quality Arctic Cooling 12cm fans which have higher air flow than our standard fans.

Leds and Heat

Leds are very sensitive to heat, as their temperature increases their efficiency and therefore light output drops dramatically. At 25C they produce their full rated output, but at 85C which is the actual operating temperature found in most lights (source Cree and Osram) they only produce 55% of their rated output (please see graph below – source Osram).
Plant Photonics lights were designed especially to operate the leds at the lowest possible temperature, normally only about 10C above the grow room temperature and therefore the leds produce 90% - 95% of their rated output, a massive 73% more light than the same leds would produce in a conventionally designed light!

How We Do It

Our lights have 2 unique design features which allow them to keep the leds so cool:
1. A "case-less design" which allows heat to "escape" instead of being trapped in the case. Normally a hot object (in grow lights its the power supplies and the heat sinks for the leds) gets rid of 80% - 90% of its heat as infra red radiation (radiative cooling) and only 10% - 20% of the heat to the air (convective cooling). Putting everything in a case traps the heat, resulting in high temperatures and requiring powerful and noisy fans. Our open design allows for sufficient natural cooling to keep the leds well within their rated temperature range, then we add fans to make then even cooler.
2. A very large area led array. Our circuit boards are far larger than those used by other companies. Instead of crowding the leds together (which concentrates the heat), we spread them out over a huge circuit board. This minimises heat buildup and allows the circuit board itself to act as a high capacity heat sink. We also use the best available quality metal core printed circuit boards (MCPCB´s) which quickly remove heat from the delicate leds, see below for more information.

Zero Down Time

No matter how well a light is made, there is a chance something will eventually fail. Imagine the problems if your light dies half way through a grow! With a Plant photonics light you have nothing to worry about. Our lights are designed to keep working in the event of a fan or power supply failure and just as importantly they are designed to be repairable by the owner, not just by us. Replacing a fan or power supply can be done by the owner in about 2 minutes with no special tools or knowledge. This is an important feature which is unique to our lights.

Light Components

The Leds

For the best grow room results you need the best leds. Plant Photonics uses Osram Oslon SSL80 leds which are the most efficient leds on the market and are available in all horticultural wavelengths.
We use the SSL80 version of the leds because normal leds spread the light over about 150 degrees, resulting in wasted light, which is why many grow light companies use add on lenses (often refereed to as "secondary optics) to concentrate the light onto the plants. Unfortunately these lose about 20% of the leds output due to internal reflections and absorption by the plastic of the lens. The Osram SSL80 leds have an 80 degree lens built in so the plants get all the light with no loss or waste.

The Circuit Boards

We use the highest grade metal core printed circuit boards (MCPCB´s) in the industry with a thermal conductivity of 2.2 W/K, which is the highest conductivity available. They are 2mm thick and feature an extra thick copper layer. Copper heat spreaders built into the circuit board draw heat away from the leds and transfer it to the circuit board. To finish off, the electrical contacts are gold plated for the ultimate in reliability.

Cooling

We use ultra quiet and reliable Xilence fans and run them at reduced speed for even quieter operation and longer life. The result is an incredibly quiet 17 db, which is so quiet they are completely inaudible even a few inches away. Life span is approximately 10+ years.

Power Supplies

We use high quality, constant current, waterproof power supplies. Our power supplies use top quality Japanese and US components for superb reliability. Unlike most power supplies they are filled with a special thermally conductive silicone instead of resin. This keeps the components much cooler and increases efficiency and reliability.

Hardware

The lights are constructed of architectural grade anodised aluminium or Dupont powder coated aluminium which is completely immune to all chemicals and humidity found in a grow room environment. All nuts and bolts are A2 stainless and are manufactured in Germany.
